Leadership Awards Recipients announced and celebrated!

Calgary, AB – April 24, 2013 Volunteer Calgary announced the recipients of the 17^th Annual Leadership Awards, presented by Enbridge Inc., at a gala held on the evening of April 23.

The Leadership Awards is Calgary’s premier volunteer recognition event which honoured the 10 outstanding award recipients out of 97 nominations received for the year.

The award recipients are as follows: Eleanor Suddaby for the Heart of Calgary Award; Sandy Bray of TELUS Spark for the Leader in Volunteer Management Award; Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award: Cenovus Energy, Hopewell Residential Communities; Volunteer Family Award: Velosa-Herrera Family – Carlos, Alexandra, Nicholas, Nathalie, Valerie; Leaders of Tomorrow Award: Cassidy Robertson for the Senior High Category, Dillon Chan for the Junior High Category, Alexander Flynn-Belanger for the Elementary Category; Youth Central’s Youth Volunteer Corps for the Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award; and Lorne Haggarty for the Volunteer in Profile Award.

These individuals and organizations represent the diversity of volunteers serving in various capacities and providing essential community services.

The gala was held at Stampede Park’s BMO Centre with close to 600 guests, comprised of individuals from the non-profit sector, corporate sector, local government and volunteers, all exhibiting the community’s strong support for volunteerism.

The evening’s highlights were the short films that featured each of the award winners and their volunteer work, which premiered before the awards were presented.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi also graced the event and gave a brief address to close the evening.

“How can you not be overwhelmed by these stories? It’s something that we have to honour and be very proud of,” said Mayor Nenshi. “Share your stories, talk to people about your service to convince others to do the same.”

The Leadership Awards also launched National Volunteer Week (NVW) celebrations in Calgary which runs from April 21 to 27. NVW is a nationwide effort held yearly to honour all volunteers across Canada.

Volunteer Calgary strengthens organizations in Calgary through its programs, training, and consulting services. It has over 470 non-profit member organizations and continues to link Calgarians with unique volunteer opportunities through the website www.volunteercalgary.ab.ca

Calgary Celebrates Volunteer Nominees

In a special gathering today, Volunteer Calgary announced the nominees for the 17^th Annual Leadership Awards.

The event held at Cardel Theatre provided an opportunity for the nominated volunteers, their nominators, and community members and supporters to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism in the community.

“Volunteers continuously provide manpower to support the non-profit sector,” said Jamie Niessen, President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “Each year, we host this special event to recognize all the nominees’ contributions. Even though we can only award one winner per category, everybody who was nominated deserves a round of applause.”

This year, 97 nominations were received by Volunteer Calgary across eight categories: Heart of Calgary, Leaders of Tomorrow, Leaders in Employee Volunteering, Leader in Volunteer Management, Leader in Volunteer Engagement, Volunteer Family, and Volunteer in Profile. The nominees represent the commitment, passion and diversity of the thousands of volunteers in Calgary who work behind the scenes to build a stronger and healthier community – youth, individuals, employee groups, lifelong volunteers and volunteer management professionals.

“This is better than Grade 3,” said 8-year old Samuel Seehawer with a smile, as he walked down the stage after being applauded as a nominee for the Leaders of Tomorrow Award.

“It’s exciting. I feel that so much needs to be done, but that our good start has been recognized,” said Selina Clary, volunteer manager of Silvera for Seniors, who was nominated for the Leader in Volunteer Management Award.

“At an event like this, it is wonderful to see what else is going on with other agencies and get an opportunity to network,” said Kate Joseph of Elizabeth Fry, whose volunteer program was nominated for an award.

The Leadership Awards is Calgary’s premier volunteer recognition event going on its 17^th year. This year, the Awards has a new presenting sponsor, Enbridge Inc.

“Enbridge values the contributions and the impact that the voluntary sector is making in our community. That’s why we are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 17^th annual Leadership Awards that celebrates Calgary’s exceptional community leaders,” says Lennina Pavon Cardoso, Senior Advisor Community Partners at Enbridge Inc.

Final award winners in each category will be announced at the Leadership Awards gala on April 23, 2013. The ceremony will also kick off National Volunteer Week celebrations in Calgary, which will run from April 17 – 23. The community is invited to join in the celebration and support volunteerism in the community by purchasing tickets to the gala on the Volunteer Calgary website.

Calgary Celebrates 2013 Volunteer Nominees

All volunteers deserve to be applauded and today, Volunteer Calgary did just that announcing the nominees for the 16^th Annual Leadership Awards.

The event held at Cardel Theatre provided an opportunity for the nominated volunteers, their nominators, and community members to celebrate the importance of volunteerism in the community.

“Volunteerism is the lifeblood of the non-profit sector,” said Jamie Niessen, President & CEO of Volunteer Calgary. “We wanted hold a special event that will acknowledge everyone’s efforts, not just those who win the awards.”

This year, 99 nominations were received by Volunteer Calgary across eight categories: Heart of Calgary, Leaders of Tomorrow, Leaders in Employee Volunteering, Leader in Volunteer Management, Leader in Volunteer Engagement, Volunteer Family, Volunteer in Profile, and Volunteer Animal. The nominees represent the commitment, passion and diversity of the thousands of volunteers in Calgary who work behind the scenes to build a stronger and healthier community.

“It’s so great to recognize people who are doing so much for the city. Calgary is such a caring community. I am grateful to Volunteer Calgary for recognizing volunteers,” said Jack Neuefeld, a lifelong Calgary volunteer who was nominated for the Heart of Calgary Award.

“It’s an exciting event and such an honour to be in the presence of so many people who are passionate about volunteering,” said Jessica Williams who was nominated for Leader in Volunteer Management for her work with Catholic Family Service.

Final award winners in each category will be announced at the Leadership Awards gala on April 17, 2012. The ceremony will also kick off National Volunteer Week celebrations in Calgary, which will run from April 15 - 21.

Volunteer Calgary Staffer Moves On
October 19, 2012

Volunteer Calgary regretfully announces that Buffy St-Amand will be leaving our organization; her last official day will be November 9, 2012.

Buffy has spent 4 years with Volunteer Calgary, most recently in the role of Director, Community Engagement, and has been a valuable member of our team. During her time at Volunteer Calgary, Buffy has created, shaped and re-shaped a number of valuable programs. In addition, she has been a great colleague and friend to staff, members, volunteers and other stakeholders.

Our staff and many of our members know Buffy best for her joie de vivre, intelligence and, most importantly, for being such a champion of Volunteer Calgary and the non-profit sector. We are tremendously grateful for the years she has spent sharing her skills with us, and the recognition she has brought to the organization. It is tough to lose a cherished colleague and it is with regret that we say goodbye.

Buffy expressed her gratitude for the relationships that she built over the past few years noting that “after four wonderful years of connecting and developing programs with community, engaging in great conversations, getting involved with meaningful causes and celebrating wise leadership and engagement, I’m ready for change.”

Buffy will continue to be engaged with Volunteer Calgary until November 9, working on knowledge transfer and ensuring continuity for all her programs. If you have any questions regarding our programs, please feel free to contact Janet Burstall, Director, Learning and Development at 403-231-1442.

Volunteer Calgary’s CCVC Wins International Award:

Fast Track Corporate Volunteer Council Award

June 19, 2012 – The Calgary Corporate Volunteer Council (CCVC), a program of Volunteer Calgary, was honoured today as the recipient of the 2012 Fast Start Corporate Volunteer Council Award at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Chicago, the largest annual gathering of service leaders from the non-profit, government and corporate sector.

The Fast Start Award is presented annually to a Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) established within the past three years that has met the CVC Principles of Excellence and demonstrated the potential for continued success. According to Points of Light Institute, Corporate Volunteer Councils are local networks that businesses join to share effective practices and address community needs through workplace volunteering.

The CalgaryCorporate Volunteer Council (CCVC) was chosen to receive this award for its commitment and dedicated efforts to empower its members to build strong and effective employee volunteer programs.

“We are extremely honoured to receive this award,” said Buffy St-Amand, Director, Community Engagement at Volunteer Calgary. “To be acknowledged this way is truly meaningful not only for the CCVC, but for Calgary. This is the first time a Corporate Volunteer Council from Canada has been recognized internationally.”

The CCVC was launched by Volunteer Calgary in 2010 with a mission to strengthen community by promoting and sharing best practice in employer-supported volunteerism within the city of Calgary. Its objectives were to develop effective partnerships between the business and non-profit sectors, foster the two-way sharing of information and expertise, promote and advance creative models of Employee Volunteering (EV), further professional development opportunities for members in this area, and increase the support and recognition for EV programs in the city.

Since its launch, growth has been continuous with CCVC membership increasing from 6 to 31 corporate members representing 9 industries. The CCVC has also consistently hosted quarterly meetings and organized annual corporate volunteering events.

“The CCVC plays a pivotal role in volunteer engagement, as members’ creativity and innovation drives the focus of the council. The CCVC has created a platform for mentoring and sharing best practices in volunteer engagement allowing members to Connect and Engage,” said Barbara Simic, Manager, Community Investment and Volunteerism at ConocoPhillips Canada and Chair of the CCVC Advisory Committee.

The CCVC will continue to lead the way as an advocate for employee volunteerism in the Calgary community.

News Release: Leadership Awards Winners Announced

(Calgary, AB – April 17, 2012) Volunteer Calgary announced the recipients of the 16^th Annual Leadership Awards in a gala held on the evening of April 17.

The Leadership Awards, the premier volunteer recognition event in Calgary, marked the culmination of a year-round nomination period. Twelve award recipients were selected out of 99 nominations received across eight award categories, which represent the diversity of volunteers serving in various capacities and providing essential community services.

The award recipients are as follows: Ashid Kumar Bahl for the Heart of Calgary Award; Renee Fleming of the Calgary Zoo for the Leader in Volunteer Management Award; Leaders in Employee Volunteering Award: Penn West Exploration, First Calgary Financial, TELUS; Volunteer Family Award: Johnson Family - Garth, Kathryn, Connor, Teague; Leaders of Tomorrow Award: Sheliza Kassam for the Senior High Category, Michelle D’Souza for the Junior High Category, Riley Beatty for the Elementary Category; Calgary Public Library for the Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award; Priscilla Popilchak for the Volunteer in Profile Award; and finally, Catfish the Horse for the Volunteer Animal Award.

The gala was held at the Stampede Park’s BMO Centre with close to 500 guests, comprised of individuals from the non-profit sector, corporate sector, local government and volunteers, displaying the community’s strong support for volunteerism. Premier Alison Redford gave a brief address to kick off the celebration.

“I understand there are about a hundred people nominated for these awards and that is just a tremendous representation of who we are as Albertans. Thank you so much for continuing to add to the quality of life in our province,” said Premier Alison Redford.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the awards to the award recipients, which was preceded by short films featuring their volunteer work. The Heart of Calgary Award recipient, Ashid Kumar Bahl, had dedicated his life to helping children all over the world and left inspiring words for everyone.

“Truly life is not really about us. It's about making life happen for somebody else who is less fortunate than us. In that lies the true significance of living -- always remember that,” said Bahl in his acceptance speech.

“Everybody in this world is looking for something. Some people are looking for wealth, some people are looking for happiness, some people are even looking for god, but in the midst of helping these children, I found everything. I hope you do, too. “

The Leadership Awards also launched National Volunteer Week (NVW) celebrations in Calgary which runs from April 15 to 21. NVW is a nationwide effort held yearly to honour all volunteers across Canada.

Volunteer Calgary has played a key role in the development of volunteerism in Calgary for over 50 years. Its mission is leading, promoting, connecting and strengthening volunteerism. Through its services and programs, it enhances the ability of approximately 440 non-profit member organizations to manage volunteers and links Calgarians with unique volunteer opportunities.

National Volunteer Week runs from April 15 - 21, 2012 and is a special week designated to celebrate people who give their time, skills and energy to help create stronger and more vibrant communities.

According to a recently released survey, the number of Canadians who volunteer increased to 13.3 million -- that means we have even more reason to celebrate!

This National Volunteer Week, let's celebrate the work of all volunteers in Calgary who help make our city strong and vibrant.
